Do You Remember The Green Vase?

I had a very interesting conversation with my soon to be Ex-wife just recently.  I was very fortunate to have been married to a very caring and sensitive woman for the best part of 17 years and though things didn't work out between us, we have remained extremely good friends.  A couple of days ago my ex rang me up and asked me if I wanted the green vase that used to sit on the mantlepiece above the fire in our last home together.  I didn't take the call so she left a message on my answerphone.

It has been four years since we last lived together and much water has passed under our respective bridges since that time.  Our shared belongings have been appropriately distributed and new ones have taken the place of things that we didn't keep.  So when my Ex offered tolet me have something that bore the hallmark of our shared times together, I was touched.

However…..

Do you think I could remember what this vase looked like?

Well no I couldn't.  I mean it was 4 years ago and it was only a vase and if I do remember correctly my love for vases at that time was about as great as my love for other things that I really don't love at all.  I can't rememeber what this thing looked like, who gave it to us or even if it existed at all!

I mean….errr… it's a vase……and apparantly it is green…

So why is it that, especially as my Ex gleefully pointed out I am supposed to be a memory expert, that I can't remember the existence of this ornament? More

Understanding And Memory - Which Comes First?

Memory or Understanding - Which should come first?
There is a great debate in educational circles about which should come first, memory or understanding.  So when you are learning a topic should you understand it first or should you memorise the facts and then try and work out what they mean?

Because I focus on memory improvement techniques and how to memorise things faster, more efficiently and for much longer I am often challenged, by teachers especially, about understanding being far more important when it comes to learning.

Whilst I'd agree with them on one level, these very same people are often the first to complain when their students are unable to remember what they have previously understood.

So which should come first, memory or understanding?

Well I think that if this is the question that is being asked about these two important elements of learning, then we are missing the most important factor.  More

A Parent's Concern About Her Son's Memory

As someone who has a strong interest in memory development and improvement, I am consulted by people from all walks of life who want to find out more about how they can improve their memory for their specific circumstances. Many of those who ask me to help them are concerned parents. Here is a question that I was asked only last week together with the advice I gave (names and some details have been changed to protect the identity of those involved).Dear Michael,

I have seen your site on memory improvement and I wondered if you could help me. My son is 12years old, he is currently at boarding school in the UK and this is his second year. He has always been a bright child and never struggled with school work achieving above average in SAT's results and being successful in obtaining a scholarship when sitting the entrance exams for the school he attends now. I was extremely proud of him, and i still am.

However since being at this new school,

Michael I think I have lost my Marbles - My Memory Is Going - Help Me!

I am losing my marbles, help me!I was working with a client recently as part of a long term project that has been going on for a couple of months now when a rather distraught woman cornered me and said "Michael you have absolutely got to help me.  I think I have lost my marbles - my memory is going - help me!"

Now she wasn't on her own because she was with a colleague who seemed to be giving this poor lady moral support - she was literally holding her up by her arm.  I had spoken to this lady on a number of occasions during this project and had until now, no idea that there was anything "wrong" with her.

I asked her what the problem was and so she proceeded to tell me.

"I can't remember anything any more.  I keep losing my handbag, keys and I have even forgot where I parked the car once.  I walk into a room and can't remember why I have gone in there.  I feel terrible because I never used to be like this…what can I do"

Now this is not the first time that I have heard almost exactly the same symptoms More

Remembering People's Names Is Just So Important

I was reminded of the importance of being able to remember peoples names when you have just met them only last night.  I have been in Bournemouth for a couple of days visiting my speaking agent and spending some time at an events exhibition/convention.  Marek and all the team from Parliament Communications were manning a stand that had an enormous and very expensive television that played the show reels of the speakers Marek with (yours truly being one of them).

Derek Redmond (World Champion 400m Relay runner and Olympian) was speaking at the end of the day and afterwards Marek treated myself and Derek and the rest of the Parliament crowd to dinner at a local Indian Restaurant.  As we walked into this busy restaurant, More
